Iowa Hockey - Then & Now
The Hawkeyes are a sanctioned University of Iowa sports club that has been in existence
since 1974. In 1979 The Iowa Hockey Team joined the Waterloo Adult Hockey League and
then in 1980 moved to the Dubuque Adult Hockey League where they played until 1982. In
the early 80s the Hawkeyes were without a collegiate league until the IceHawks became
members of the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association, which was an independent hockey
league comprised mostly of small schools in Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Teams included;
University of Iowa; Grinnel College, IA; Cornell College, IA; Palmer College, IA; Knox College,
IL; Ripon College, WI; Carthage College, WI. and Illinois State. Iowa's Dan Seliger was
instrumental in the formation of the MCHA and starting in 1988 the league champion was
awarded the "Seliger Cup" in his honor. After the dissolution of the MCHA, Iowa operated as
an independent team until the Hawkeyes joined the MACHA. In 2003-04 the Hawks took
second place in the conference, which at the time, was the best finish in team history. In
04-05 the Hawks were able to build on that success and win the MACHA Silver Division
Championship and in 06-06 Iowa's winning ways continued as they finished with their best
conference record ever, although they were unable to repeat as MACHA Champs. The goal
of the club is to continue to build on their recent success and strive to become a more
competitive team and organization.
