Hawks Take Two From Western
With a tough series coming up against Conference-leading DePaul, the IceHawks
were hoping to use their games against Western Illinois to prepare, and that is what
they did. Behind a solid overall effort, and goaltender Tim Strauch's first shutout of
the season, the Hawkeyes easily defeated Western on Friday night by the score of
7-0.

The scoring opened for Iowa on an unassisted goal by Kyle Norris at 4:37 into the
game. Kevin Lorenz added a goal of his own on a break-away four minutes later to
put the Hawks ahead by two. The lead increased to three in the favor of the
Hawkeyes before the end of the period as Kenny Galinski scored from the point on a
cross-ice pass from Joe Fruin.

The Hawks kept the momentum going in the second as Mike Giles started the period
with his 26th goal of the season off of a perfect centering pass from Craig Bagdon at
3:40 into the period. With 12:29 remaining in the second Joe Fruin picked up his
second assist of the night as he dished the puck to Andy Arreguin for a goal. Before
the period was out both Lorenz and Arreguin would add another goal to their totals to
make the score 7-0 in the favor of the Hawks. The third period would see plenty of
action, as Tyler Schultz was removed from the game for fighting, but no scoring as
the Hawks went on to a convincing win.

On Saturday the story was very much the same as Kyle Norris and Kevin Lorenz
again fired the opening scores to make it a two goal Iowa lead after the first period.
Jamie Elliott added to that lead as he scored on a pass from Kenny Galinski 4:27 into
the second. Western then cut the lead down to one as they got two past Iowa
netminder Dave Barwig, one on a defensive miscue by the Hawks, and another on an
Iowa penalty kill. However, that would be the last of the scoring for Western as the
Hawkeyes would score four unanswered goals to make the final 7-2 in the favor of
Iowa.  The last four Iowa goals were scored by: Kyle Norris, Mike Giles, Kevin Lorenz,
and JP Cadorin.

Iowa will face off against DePaul this weekend in a battle for first place in the
Mid-American Collegiate Hockey Association. The Hawkeyes are currently
guaranteed the second seed in the MACHA playoffs as they have 25 conference
points, but they can claim the first seed with a clean sweep of Depaul. The games will
be at 11 PM on Friday, February 17th and 6:50 PM Saturday, February 18th at
McFetridge Ice Arena in Chicago, IL
