Hawkeyes Dominate Redbirds in Opening MACHA Game
#4 Iowa vs. #5 Illinois State:
1st Period:  Iowa leads Illinois State after 1st period of conference play, 1-0.  Tim Strauch started in goal for the
Hawkeyes and turned away 12 first period shots to keep the Redbirds scoreless through one.  #18 Pete Opalcz
scored the Hawks lone goal which was assisted by #4 Kyle Jacobson.
2nd Period:    An explosion of goals in the second period lifts the Hawkeyes to a commanding 4 to 1 lead
heading into the 3rd and what-may-be final period for the Redbirds.  The Hawkeyes tallied 17-2nd period shots
and converted on 3 of them while holding Illinois State to a mere 6 shots during the 2nd.  #15 Graeme Laxton
from Kyle Jacobson on a powerplay put the Hawks up by 2 and got them rolling. A third Hawk goal from #19 Joe
Scerba, assisted by #27 Sean Phelan makes it 3-0 Hawks.  Laxton put the Hawks up by 4 before the Redbirds
could ruin the shutout with little time left in the 2nd period.  Stay tuned 3rd period updates..
3rd Period:  With another 3-goal period, the Hawks defeat Illinois State by a score of 7-2.  Tim Strauch stopped
8 third period shots.  Scerba got the Hawkeyes rolling again in the third period for three unanswered goals.  
Victor Pontius and Jordan Snetselaar put the puck past the Redbird netminder as well to make it a 7-1 game.  
With only 2:28 remaining in the game, Illinois State scored a second goal to make it a 7-2 final score.
