Hawks Release 2007 Schedule
The University of Iowa IceHawks released their tentative 2007-08 season schedule
today. The Hawkeyes are tentatively scheduled to open the season the weekend of
September 21st in Lawrence, Kansas where they will take on the University of
Kansas Jayhawks. This is listed as the tentative opening because the Hawkeyes are
still considering adding a Junior or other non-ACHA team to their schedule to start
the season a week earlier. The Hawks home opener will come against Loyola
University of Chicago on September 28th at Coral Ridge Ice Arena.
The 2007 schedule includes six series against opponents who were ranked during
the 2006 season. The schedule also includes two separate series against Iowa State
University's Division 1 team, with one series on the weekend of December 7th and
8th, 2007 to finish off the first half of the season, and the second on the weekend of
January 25th and 26th, 2008 . While the Hawks fell short of the playoffs for the first
time in 5 seasons in 06-07 the rival Cyclones were crowned champs of the Division 1
Central States Collegiate Hockey League, and in their series against the Hawkeyes
outscored their rival Iowa by a score of 20-3 in two games.
The Hawkeyes will also travel to Lexington, Kentucky to face the University of
Kentucky Wildcats for the first time ever. The Wildcats finished last season ranked
No. 6 in the ACHA's Southeast Division.
Iowa will face all of it's conference foes from last season, with the exception of
Marquette, who was voted down a division. The Hawkeyes 2007 games against
Palmer College will count towards conference standings unlike in 2006 as the Palmer
Dragons were voted into the gold division of the MACHA along with the Illinois State
Redbirds, who the Hawkeyes will face in Bloomington on February 10th and 11th,
2008.
The Hawkeyes will face perennial conference rival Eastern Illinois on November 16th
and 17th, 2007. Conference games will carry additional importance this season as
the Mid-American Collegiate Hockey Association playoff field was expanded from 4
teams to 6 at the conference's annual league meeting. with the first and second
place teams receiving first round byes.
After a disappointingly slow start to the 2006-07 season the Hawkeyes were unable
to recover despite an excellent second half push. As a result the Hawks finished 5th
in the MACHA and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2001. With the
expansion of the playoff field the Hawkeyes would have been a qualifying team and
despite another tough schedule the Hawks look to return to the playoffs in 07-08.
