Hawkeyes Sweep Illinois State
Despite a lack of consistency the Iowa Hockey Team swept the Illinois State Redbirds
this past weekend at Coral Ridge Ice Arena. The IceHawks' level of play once again
fluctuated throughout the series and in both games the Hawks were only able to put
together two solid periods of play. This is a tendency the IceHawks had for much of
last season until they were finally able to put some complete games together as the
playoffs approached. With important series coming up against Iowa State and
McKendree the Hawks will need to improve in this aspect of their game if they hope to
remain unbeaten.
On Friday night the first period ended with the Hawks up 2-1 after goals by Matt
Winkler and Jamie Elliott. In the second period Matt Giles would add a goal to put the
Hawks up by two and Winkler would score another to make it a 4-1 Iowa lead.
However, just like in the series with Robert Morris, it seemed as though the Hawkeyes
became to comfortable with their lead and they began to let up. This allowed Illinois
State to come storming back and score 3 goals in the last 5 minutes of the period to
tie the game.
The Hawks came out playing much better in the third period and with 15 and a half
minutes remaining in the game Iowa defenseman Ken Galinski scored to regain the
lead for the Hawkeyes. Jamie Elliott would notch his second goal of the game
unassisted 21 seconds later as he took advantage of an Illinois State turnover to put
the hawks up by two. Mike Giles would also score again to increase the Hawkeye
lead to 7-4 only 18 seconds after Elliott's goal. The Redbirds and the Hawkeyes
would trade scores before the end of the game with Kyle Norris getting Iowa's last
goal to make the final score 8-6.
On Saturday afternoon Iowa again struck first as Kevin Lorenz received a pass from
Andy Arreguin and buried the puck in the Illinois State net 3 minutes into the game.
The Redbirds would come back to score the next 3 goals and take an early two goal
lead. But with 21 seconds remaining in the initial period Mike Giles would score on a
pass from Kyle Norris to close the gap to one. Illinois State would score two goals to
begin the second period before Iowa goalie Dave Barwig was removed from the
game. Tim Strauch replaced him but the Redbirds would score again after Iowa was
penalized for having too many men on the ice. However, that would be the end of the
scoring for Illinois State as the Hawkeyes began to mount their comeback.
With 7 minutes remaining in the second period and Iowa down by three Nick Giardini
caught a pass from Rees O'Donnell and fired a shot from the point that was tipped in
by JP Cadorin. A minute later Giardini would get a pass from Mike Giles and rip
another shot that went in all on its own to bring Iowa within one. Tyler Schultz would
tie the game up with a little over 4 minutes remaining on another shot from the point
after a pass from Andy Arreguin and Keith High would put the Hawks up for good with
3 and a half minutes remaining in the second period.
After High's go-ahead goal Iowa would pile on 6 more to make the final score Iowa 12
Illinois State 5. Three of the last 6 goals would be scored by Jamie Elliott and two
would be by Mike Giles to give both players hat tricks for the game. The Hawkeyes
completely dominated the second half after falling behind as they scored 10
unanswered goals and played some of their best hockey of the young 2006 season.
Iowa showed their ability to dominate the flow of a game and they will need to improve
that ability and work on their consistency as the season continues.
*Notes: Iowa Assistant Captain Jimmy Hayes missed the series due to illness...
Injuries kept Iowa players Joe Fruin (knee) and Alex Gillaspie (shoulder) sidelined but
both are expected to play next weekend... Keith High and Brian Paro filled in off the
reserve roster again for the Hawkeyes and Paro notched his first points of the
season... Kevin Lorenz will be suspended for Game 1 against Iowa State as he was
disqualified from Saturdays contest.
