Iowa Takes Conference Game From McKendree
The Iowa Hawkeyes traveled to St. Louis this past weekend to play their first of two
series against the McKendree University BearCats and got an important conference
victory with a 6-3 win on Friday night. Saturday's non-conference matchup ended in
a 5-5 tie but the Hawks remain unbeaten through 8 games with MACHA Conference
opponents.

After suffering two tough losses to #5 Iowa State the previous weekend Iowa was
hoping to build upon those losses and use them as a learning experience. It cetainly
seemed that Iowa managed this on Friday night as the IceHawks were back to their
old ways and once again struck first on a break away goal by Jamie Elliott. The
remainder of the first period would go by without any change in score. At the start of
the second period Mike Giles got one past the McKendree goaltender to put the
Hawkeyes up by two. Five minutes later Rees O'Donnell added a goal of his own on a
rebound and increased the Iowa lead to 3. Captain Mike Coleman followed with
another Iowa score to put the game at 4-0 in favor of Iowa at the end of two.

It looked as though the IceHawks were rolling but in the third the BearCats would fight
back and pull within just one score of the Hawkeyes by tallying three unanswered
goals. However, Mckendree would get no closer as Mike Giles notched his second of
the game late in the period to put the Hawks up by two. Later in the game and with
one minute remaining JP Cadorin would score an empty-net goal from Iowa's own
zone to put the game on ice and secure a conference victory for the Hawks.

The Hawks scored first again on Saturday afternoon and despite a game where the
goals went back and forth game Iowa managed to stay ahead until the BearCats tied
the game at 5 with 8 minutes remaining in the third period on an Iowa defensive
lapse. Thirteen minutes and 1 overtime later the game ended in the Hawkeyes'
second tie of season. Fortunately for Iowa it was not a conference matchup and so
they surrendered no points to McKendree in the MACHA conference standings.
However, in both games Iowa was again out-shot by the opposition and the play of
goalies Tim Strauch and Dave Barwig is primarily what allowed Iowa to get three
points out of the weekend.

*Notes: James Hayes missed the McKendree series with illness... Kevin Lorenz was
absent due to personal matters... Alex Gillaspie missed for academic purposes... No
players were called up from the reserve roster and the Hawks played with 3 empty
bench spots...  The IceHawks will take on MACHA rival Eastern Illinois this weekend in
their first games at Coral Ridge Ice Arena in 3 weeks.
