Another Iowa Sweep
The Iowa Hawkeyes completed their fourth sweep of the 05-06 season this weekend
at Coral Ridge Ice Arena. Despite looking rusty and sluggish at times in their first
games after Thanksgiving Break, the Hawks added the Southern Illinois Cougars to a
list that already includes conference opponents Illinois State, Robert Morris, and
Eastern Illinois. With the victories Iowa took control of first place in the MACHA where
the Hawks have captured 21 conference points out of a possible 22. The Hawks had
previously trailed the Depaul Blue Demons in the standings by a single point, but with
Depaul playing a non-conference match up the IceHawks were able to take the lead.
The IceHawks came out in the first period on Friday night looking like they had not
played a game for three weeks, which they hadn’t. For the first time this season
against a conference opponent Iowa did not manage to score in the opening period.
However, despite looking a little slow the Hawkeyes still managed to control the flow
of the game and might have scored if it were not for the great play of the Sourthern
goalie. Much of the second period went the same way and it looked as though the
game might be decided in the third period until Tyler Schultz scored a shorthanded
goal with 2:56 remaining in the second. Mike Giles then put another shorthanded
goal past the Southern netminder just 38 seconds later and Iowa ended the second
with a two goal lead.
It was evident that third period would not be the same as the first 37 minutes of the
game when Mike Giles notched his second score of the game on a pass from Jamie
Elliott just 2 minutes and 6 seconds into the period. The Hawks would dominate the
entire period as they would go on to score three more goals. UI center Kyle Norris
increased the lead to 4 when he scored an unassisted goal with 12:18 remaining in
the game. Defenseman Tyler Schultz caught a pass from Brian Paro and scored his
second of the game four minutes later and Norris tallied his second on a pass from
Jamie Elliott in the waning minutes of the game. The Hawks finished with a 6-0 win as
goalie Dave Barwig led the Hawks to their first shutout of the season.
The story would not be the same on Saturday as Iowa’s JP Cadorin scored just 1:25
into the game to give Iowa the lead. The Hawks dominated the period as they added
goals from Kenny Galinski and Brian Paro to make it 3-0 at the end of the first.
Southern was not done however as they would get one past goalie Tim Struach on
an Iowa turnover with 8:36 remaining in the second to decrease the lead to 2. It
looked like this would be the score heading into the third but JP Cadoring got his
second goal of the game with just 4 seconds remaining in the period on a pass from
Tyler Schultz to give Iowa a 4-1 advantage.
Iowa’s third period goals came from Mike Giles and defenseman Craig Bagdon as the
Hawks traded goals with Southern to make the final 6-3 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
Iowa managed to pull off the victory despite accumulating a whopping 46 penalty
minutes on Saturday with many of them thanks to a number of questionable calls by
the officiating crew that frustrated both Southern and Iowa. The Hawkeyes had 34
fewer penalty minutes on Friday night playing against the same team. Nevertheless
Iowa’s roll through conference play continued and they will take on the McKendree
University Bearcats at Coral Ridge Ice Arena next weekend in the teams’ second
meeting of the year.
Notes: Andy Arreguin missed the series with a shoulder injury... UI Assistant Captain
James Hayes returned to the ice for the Hawks in his first games since the season
opener... Mike Coleman and Zach Piper were disqualified from Saturday's contest...
The Hawkeyes take on Mckendree University for the second time next weekend on
12/9 at 9pm and on 12/10 at 4:45 at Coral Ridge Mall.
