Hawkeyes Keep Playoff Hopes Alive
The University of Iowa IceHawks went into their series with Illinois State University last
weekend needing a sweep of the Redbirds in order to keep their playoff hopes alive,
and that is exactly what they got. The Hawks dominated the Redbirds in both games,
beating them by the scores of 5-0 and 8-2.
The Hawkeyes began Friday night’s contest a little overconfident about playing a
winless ISU team and played sloppily for the start of the first period. However, the
Hawks improved their play as the game went along and gradually took control before
shutting down the Redbirds.
Iowa’s play improved on Saturday afternoon as they controlled the pace of nearly the
entire game. The Hawks had some trouble with penalties as they racked up 36
penalty minutes on 14 penalties. Only those times when Illinois State was on the
power play could they take some control away from the Hawkeyes, and even then
Iowa often retained the momentum. They will need to carry that momentum into this
weekend as they will face their toughest test of the season when they face off against
Missouri.
The IceHawks will play their last home games of the 2004-05 season this weekend
against the undefeated University of Missouri. They need at least one tie in order to
guarantee themselves a spot in the MACHA playoffs. If they do not tie Missouri they
will have to rely on help from other teams, and that is a situation the Hawkeyes would
prefer to avoid. The games against Missouri are at 11pm on Friday February 4, and
4:45 pm on Saturday Feburary 5 so come see the Hawkeyes battle for a playoff
position!
