Hawkeye Hockey Back on the Ice
The Hawkeyes returned to the ice last weekend and faced off against rival Northern
Iowa after going over a month without playing a game together. It was a game where
the rust on their skates was easy to spot and their play was much slower than usual.
This contributed to the Hawks losing their first game in Waterloo Friday night by the
score of 7-4. The pace was dictated by Northern Iowa for much of the game and
though Iowa pulled close a few times they could not pull out a victory.
Luckily for the Hawks many of the kinks in their legs were worked out by Saturday
evening in Cedar Rapids where they were taking part in the Hawkeye Hockey Double
Header in conjunction with the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders. Despite being
tremendously outshot Iowa’s play improved considerably over that of the previous
night. While the Hawkeyes still did not play to the best of their abilities, they managed
to take Northern to overtime largely thanks to the outstanding play of goalie Tim
Strauch. Despite the determined play of Strauch a costly mistake cost Iowa the game
as Northern scored on a wrap-around with three minutes remaining, resulting in only
the second winless series for the Hawkeyes this season.
The Hawks go on the road this weekend to face the Illinois State Redbirds in their
first league play since sweeping Wheaton at home Dec. 11th. The Hawks will need to
play well against the Redbirds in order to rebound from their losses to NIU and
prepare for their series against first place Missouri. The series against Missouri is
Iowa’s last home series of the season and it takes place Feb 4th and 5th so be sure
to be at Coral Ridge Mall for the home finale. The Hawks currently sit in fourth place
in the MACHA Silver and with only six games remaining will need to barrel through
Illinois State, Missouri, and Minnesota in order to make the playoffs.
