Hawkeyes drop both to Iowa State, suffer first losses of 2021-22 season

CORALVILLE, Iowa – The University of Iowa suffered a pair of defeats over the weekend in a home-and-home series with Iowa State University.

Friday night at Ames/ISU Arena, Brady Brenczewski, Jake Carlson and Aiden Germaine scored in a 9-3 loss to the Cyclones.

Miles Corrigan and Justin Howard shared time in goal for Iowa.

Then Saturday night at Xtream Arena, the Hawkeyes lost 3-1.

“Iowa State is a high-caliber hockey team,” said Howard. “They were the best team we have played yet. In Friday’s game, we came out flat-footed, didn’t execute, and our energy was low. We turned it around a bit in the second half and used it to come out today with better play. I think it was good for our confidence and shows we can compete with top teams.

“We have work to do, but I am confident with the talent on our team that we can succeed.”

Matt Wilson netted a shorthanded goal for Iowa and Howard took the defeat between the pipes.

“It’s a hard pill to swallow but we know where to go from here,” said Iowa head coach David VanDeveer.
