Iowa comes from behind, downs UWO Saturday for sweep

CORALVILLE, Iowa – The University of Iowa hockey team trailed the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh after the first two periods, but the Hawkeyes came alive in the third period and defeated UWO 8-5 Saturday night to sweep the weekend series at the Coral Ridge Ice Arena.

Jake Carlson scored three goals and added two assists while Carter Winborne took the win in goal making his collegiate debut.

“We struggled with penalties and went down early,” said Iowa head coach David VanDeveer. “I’m proud of everyone who pulled together and worked hard for a gritty victory.”

CJ Parisi and Zach Lupori chipped in two goals each and Matt Wilson scored once.

Luca Goulding, Will Ciannella and Ben Letto each tallied two assists.

Iowa was down 3-1 after 20 minutes and 5-4 through 40 minutes.

For Winborne, the win was especially sweet.

“A win is a win, but I am not happy with my performance,” Winborne said. “I am always glad to get the two points and I felt as team that we learned a lot this weekend. It was reassuring to see everyone still fighting even when I put the team in a bad spot. I didn’t feel comfortable until I took that hit from one of the UWO players and I finally felt like I was playing my game.

“I feels good to get my first victory as a Hawkeye and this is a moment I won’t forget for a while. My parents got to come watch and I never realized how much I missed hockey until after we won. I am excited to keep working and continue winning.”

The Hawkeyes are off next weekend before hosting St. Louis University for two games Oct. 8-9 from Coral Ridge. Game time is 7 p.m. Friday night and 1:30 p.m. for the finale on Saturday.
