NHL Awards: Aleksander Barkov Receives Selke and King Clancy Trophies in Surprise Presentation

Aleksander Barkov recently won two major NHL awards—the Selke Trophy and the King Clancy Trophy—in a surprise presentation that touched many fans and players. Both awards highlight Barkov’s outstanding skills on the ice and his strong leadership and kindness off the ice.

What Is the King Clancy Trophy?

The King Clancy Trophy is given to the player who shows great leadership both on and off the ice. It also recognizes players who have made important humanitarian contributions to their community. Barkov is well-known for his charity work, especially at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

Since 2019, Barkov has donated money every time he scores or assists a goal. For every goal he scores (wearing jersey number 16), he donates $1,600, and for every assist, he gives $800. So far, Barkov has donated more than $400,000 to help children in need.

After winning the 2024 Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers by beating the Edmonton Oilers, Barkov took the Cup to the children’s hospital to share the joy. He promised, “If we win the Cup again, I’m definitely bringing it back to Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital.”

Surprise Selke Trophy Presentation

Right after Barkov received the King Clancy Trophy from the children and the Hockey Hall of Fame staff, the Selke Trophy was brought into the room. Barkov said, “I was not expecting it at all. When they brought in another trophy, it was pretty overwhelming for me. I am truly honored by that award.”

The Selke Trophy is awarded to the forward who is best at defensive play in the NHL. This makes Barkov a star not only for his scoring but also for his strong defensive game.

Barkov’s Achievements with the Selke Trophy

This is Barkov’s second straight Selke Trophy and the third in his career. He first won it after the 2020-21 season. With three Selke Trophies, Barkov is tied for third place in NHL history for most Selke wins. Only Bob Gainey with four and Patrice Bergeron with six have more.

In the voting by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, Barkov received 1,363 votes. He had 526 more votes than his teammate Sam Reinhart, who came second. Tampa Bay Lightning’s Anthony Cirelli finished third with 828 votes, just nine fewer than Reinhart.
