After five years of rebuilding under General Manager Steve Yzerman, the Detroit Red Wings were expected to finally make a return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the 2024–25 season. For a while, it looked like they would. But once again, the team stumbled near the end, finishing five points behind the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
A Familiar Ending
By early March, the Red Wings were holding onto the last wild-card spot in the East. But just like last season, they lost momentum at a crucial time and missed the playoffs. Last year, it was due to fewer regulation wins. This time, they simply couldn’t hang on.
Yzerman Talks Offseason Strategy
On April 29, Steve Yzerman met with the media to discuss his plans for the offseason. As reported by Max Bultman of The Athletic, Yzerman said he’s willing to use any available assets—including draft picks, prospects, or even roster players—to strengthen the team through trades.
This bold statement came after a pointed remark by team captain Dylan Larkin, who suggested the GM’s lack of a big trade at the deadline affected the team’s momentum and playoff push.
Larkin Speaks Out—and Sparks Speculation
Larkin’s comment got people talking, with some even wondering if the Wings might consider trading their captain. But Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now quickly shut down those rumours. Larkin has six years left on his contract, with a full no-trade clause until the 2027–28 season. Trading him isn’t realistic—nor is there a clear replacement for him on the current roster or in this summer’s trade or free-agent markets.
Yzerman did mention that he spoke to Larkin about the comments, but didn’t share any details. Instead, he put the responsibility back on the team’s top players to lift the team’s performance when it matters most.
What About Tarasenko?
Another player in the spotlight is Vladimir Tarasenko. The veteran right winger managed only 11 goals this season, leading some to think he might be bought out of the final year of his contract. However, according to The Hockey News’ Sam Stockton, Yzerman seemed to back Tarasenko by saying his on-ice play was better than his stats. That suggests there’s a good chance the 33-year-old returns next season.
The Red Wings have shown flashes of potential but have now fallen just short for two seasons in a row. Steve Yzerman has made it clear he’s willing to shake things up this summer to finally get his team over the hump. But while fans want big changes, it’s unlikely to include a major trade involving Larkin. The focus will instead be on smart trades and maybe adding a few solid players who can support the team’s core.
If the Wings want to return to being serious playoff contenders, this offseason will be crucial.
